Engineering Laboratory for Flame Retardant and Functional Materials of Henan Province

In the 1980s, the laboratory began to study the synthesis and application of new flame retardants and antistatic agents. In 1997, a flame retardant and antistatic material laboratory was established. In 2001, it was rated as a university-level scientific research laboratory. In 2003, it was selected as  a university-level key laboratory. In 2009, the laboratory and Kaifeng Longyu Chemical Limited Liability Company jointly established the Flame Retardant Material Engineering and Technology Research Center of Henan University. In 2011, this engineering center was rated as the Provincial Flame Retardant Material Engineering Technology Research Center. In 2013, based on the Flame Retardant Material Engineering Center, the laboratory and Kaifeng Longyu Chemical Limited Liability Company and Qixian New Material Industry Cluster District jointly established the Henan Provincial Engineering Laboratory for Flame Retardant and Functional Materials.

The engineering laboratory has basic research platform more than 1,000 square meters and over 2,000 square meters of pilot and engineering incubator bases. It has twin-screw extruders, injection molding machines, mixing mixers, flat vulcanization and other processing equipment. It  has processing equipment such as twin-screw extruders, injection molding machines, mixing mixers, flat vulcanization, and property evaluation devices for material flame retardant and mechanical performance, and large and medium-sized equipment such as cone calorimeter, rheometer, laser particle size analyzer, etc. The total value of these equipment is nearly 30 million yuan. There are 28 fixed researchers in the laboratory, including 6 professors, 4 senior engineers, 2 professor-level senior engineers, and 80% with doctoral degrees. The research and development team not only has solid research skills and innovative capabilities, but also has rich experience in engineering practice.

The engineering laboratory has established three stable research directions: the construction and research of new flame retardants, the development of high-performance flame retardant materials, and the development of novel organic functional materials. After many years of construction and practice, the laboratory has gradually become an industrialized research and development base with production, education and research integration. It has distinctive research features, a certain level of social service capabilities, and includes research, development, engineering design, project management, operation and test. In recent years, the laboratory has undertaken more than 10 national-level projects such as 973, 863 and the National Natural Science Foundation of China, 23 provincial and ministerial-level projects, and applied for 17 invention patents; the laboratory has completed 4 industrialized production projects, 4 pilot testing products, and more than 20 identification results; the laboratory has won 2 Science and Technology Progress Awards in Henan Province, 5 Natural Science Awards in Henan Province, and more than 200 academic papers have been published.
